If you’ve followed SEC basketball since the season ended back in March, then you likely know that many teams from across the conference have been active in the transfer portal, some more than others.
So far this offseason, all 16 SEC teams have landed at-least one addition via the transfer portal, with a few programs in particular also having added some players that are not only among the nation’s best in the cycle, as well as expected to be prominent names across the conference next season.
However, just which SEC programs were the biggest “winners?” You know, the teams who made likely the biggest, or most impactful, additions through the portal that could make significant impacts in 2024-25?
Let’s answer that question today by ranking our five biggest SEC basketball transfer portal winners up to this point in the offseason, starting with No. 5.
NOTE: Transfer portal classes current as of Friday, May 10, 2024
- Alijah Martin, Florida Atlantic Owls Guard
- Sam Alexis, Chattanooga Mocs Forward
- Rueben Chinyelu, Washington State Cougars Center
We begin with the Florida Gators, who have added three impactful names from outside the SEC, the biggest of which likely comes from within the state at Florida Atlantic in guard Alijah Martin. Martin, a career 11.9 PPG scorer across four seasons with the Owls, is a three-time all-conference performer that should play a prominent role for Florida in 2024-25.
- Jacob Crews, UT Martin Skyhawks Forward
- Marques Warrick, Northern Kentucky Norse Guard
A team that also sports one of the SEC’s top 2024 recruiting classes, Missouri’s portal class is not lacking for talent either. Arguably the headline of this group as well is Duke’s Mark Mitchell, a two-year starter with the Blue Devils that averaged 11.6 PPG and 6 RPG a year ago for the Blue Devils.
- Koby Brea, Dayton Flyers Guard
- Brandon Garrison, Oklahoma State Cowboys Center
- Lamont Butler Jr., San Diego State Aztecs Guard
- Kerr Kriisa, West Virginia Mountaineers Guard
- Andrew Carr, Wake Forest Demon Deacons Forward
- Amari Williams, Drexel Dragons Center
New Kentucky Wildcats head coach Mark Pope has certainly been busy in the transfer portal over the last couple of weeks, as the Wildcats currently own seven different commitments, which is the second-most in the SEC behind only Vanderbilt with eight. Of those seven, none come from within the SEC, with some of the most notable being Dayton guard Koby Brea, as well as Oklahoma State center Brandon Garrison.
- Chris Youngblood, South Florida Bulls Guard
- Houston Mallette, Pepperdine Waves Guard
Not only does Alabama bring arguably the SEC’s top recruiting class to Tuscaloosa next season, but also one of the conference’s best transfer portal classes as well. This group includes a player from within the SEC, Auburn guard Aden Holloway, making his way to Alabama, as well as one of the top shot blockers in the transfer in Rutgers’ Clifford Omoruyi, who is a two-time Big Ten All-Defense selection.
- Johnell Davis, Florida Atlantic Owls Guard
- Adou Thiero, Kentucky Wildcats Forward
- Zvonimir Ivisic, Kentucky Wildcats Center
New Arkansas head coach John Calipari has been active in the transfer portal since taking the job in Fayetteville, landing four different players, three of which come from within the SEC, as well as two from Kentucky. That trio joins one of the top overall transfers of the cycle in Johnell Davis, who was named 2023-24 AAC Player of the year at Florida Atlantic last season by averaging 18.2 PPG, 6.3 RPG, 2.9 APG, and 1.4 SPG on 41.4% shooting from three.
