Schiefelbein pitched a two-hitter to lead the Corona baseball team to a 5-0 victory over Harvard-Westlake on Saturday night in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 championship game in front of 4,783 at The Diamond.
“I took it easy in my first few outings in the playoffs to make sure I was good for this game,” said Schiefelbein, who has signed with UCLA. “This is the moment we wanted. We knew it was going to come and we just did what we knew we could do.”
Schiefelbein struck out nine and did not walk a batter as Corona (30-3 overall) became the first No. 1 seed to capture the Division 1 title since Camarillo in 2002.
“I’m going to say it: ‘He’s that good,’” Corona coach Andy Wise said. “He was absolutely geared up and dialed in and ready to go and he did exactly what he wanted to do.”
Schiefelbein (8-0) only allowed a base hit to Harvard-Westlake’s Bryce Rainer to lead off the game, and a harmless single to No. 9 hitter Ira Rootman in the sixth.
The 6-foot-3 left-hander, widely considered among the best high school pitchers in the country, finished his season with 83 strikeouts in 52 innings while lowering his miniscule earned-run average to 0.25.
“It’s amazing that he knows exactly what he needs to do to have success, and sometimes that means pumping the brakes a little bit and not going so hard all the time,” Wise said. “He definitely saved himself for today.”
Duncan Marsten pitched into the fifth inning but was tagged for four earned runs on six hits for Harvard-Westlake (27-5-1), which had its 10-game winning streak snapped.
After a quiet first three innings, Marsten ran into trouble in the fourth when he hit Josh Springer and Billy Carlson followed with an infield single. That put two runners on base for Sam Burgess, who rocketed a 2-1 fastball from Martsten over the high wall in right field.
“I was like, ‘I gotta do something right here, and I came through,” said Burgess, who has signed with TCU. “I couldn’t feel my legs when I got back to the dugout.”
Corona grabbed another run in the fifth when Trey Ebel scored on a passed ball and added its lead in the sixth with an RBI single by Daniel Rivera that scored Burgess.
Schiefelbein did the rest, recording at least one strikeout in each of the first six innings and retiring 15 consecutive batters at one point.
“This was my No. 1 goal, to come out and win this game,” said Schiefelbein, ranked No. 74 on MLB.com’s list of 2024 draft prospects. “We’ve proven that we’re the best in the country.”
This was Corona’s fifth appearance in a championship game. The Panthers previously won titles in 1992 (Division 3-A) and 1998 (Division 2). They were the Division 1 runner-up in both 2012 and 2017.
“That was the No. 1 goal, originally, was to win this,” said Wise, who is 270-162 in 14 seasons. “So to win the National High School Invitational, go undefeated (15-0) in a very tough Big VIII League, and to win this is just a really special season from a legendary group.”
Anthony Murphy, Brady Ebel and Trey Ebel also added hits for Corona, which outscored opponents 18-6 in the playoffs.
