Manny Malhotra is coming back home.

The former Vancouver Canucks centre, a defensive lynchpin for the organization during the peak years of the Sedin era, has been named head coach of the club’s American League affiliate the Abbotsford Canucks.

Malhotra was an assistant coach with the Canucks organization from 2017 through to 2020 when he departed to take an assistant coaching role on Sheldon Keefe’s staff with the Toronto Maple Leafs organization. A sharp hockey mind with a reputation for being an excellent communicator, Malhotra has never previously been a head coach in professional hockey.

General Manager Patrik Allvin announces that Manny Malhotra has been hired as the new head coach of the Abbotsford Canucks.

“Having played against Manny in the NHL, I know firsthand many of the great qualities he possesses and the competitiveness in his DNA,” said Abbotsford general manager Ryan Johnson in a team release. “He is a teacher first and his skillset and mindset will fit in perfectly with our vision for the team in Abbotsford.”

Malhotra will replace Jeremy Colliton after the Canucks and Colliton failed to come to terms on a new contract. Colliton spent two years with the Canucks organization and was highly regarded by club leadership for his work developing players and instilling the sort of habits and staples that the organization prizes.

Despite Colliton’s sturdy work in Abbotsford and his preference to remain in the Fraser Valley, negotiations between the club and their American League head coach pivoted over price point. Both sides began to explore their options, and Vancouver has emerged as the first mover, identifying a big name with local ties to replace Colliton in Abbotsford.

“Bringing in someone who is familiar with the organization is a big win for us,” said Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin in a team release. “Manny’s experience in hockey development and coaching has prepared him really well for this head coaching opportunity. We look forward to working with him and providing our staff in Abbotsford all the support they need to continue to develop our players.”
