A 20-year-old man who arranged a drug deal that ended with a Colorado Springs, Colo. man shot to death in San Bernardino three years ago was sentenced to more than 15 years in federal prison on Monday, June 3, officials said.
Dillion Jones, of San Bernardino, pleaded guilty in March to counts including conspiracy to interfere with commerce by robbery, interference with commerce by robbery, discharging a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence resulting in death, discharging a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence and possessing a stolen firearm.
In July 2021, Jones placed an order for one pound of marijuana with the victim, Daniel Michel, 21, knowing that neither of his co-conspirators, brothers Martrell Patrick Shaw and Rontrell Brainell Shaw had enough money to pay for it, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. The trio robbed the victim at gunpoint at their meeting spot in a residential neighborhood in the 1300 block of West Hill Drive.
Jones and Martrell Shaw carried loaded firearms and Rontrell Shaw acted as the driver.
One of the men shot Michel twice during the robbery, striking him in the neck and torso, and fleeing after stealing the marijuana along with a firearm belonging to Michel, officials said.
He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Jones was sentenced in U.S. District Court to 15 and a half years in prison. He was also ordered to pay $14,342 in restitution.
Rontrell Shaw, 22, was sentenced in January to 14 years in federal prison along with his his brother, Martrell Shaw, 20, who was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison.
