Rory McIlroy is taking a three-week hiatus from competitive golf following his crushing back nine at Pinehurst No. 2, where he let his fifth major slip away by missing two putts inside three feet.
The Northern Irishman announced his decision to withdraw from this week’s Travelers Championship on X. He congratulated Bryson DeChambeau on his second U.S. Open victory and declared the LIV golfer a deserving champion, praising him for being “exactly what professional golf needs right now.”
McIlroy addressed his performance at the championship and reflected on his 17-year-long professional career. The four-time major champion then shared that he’ll take an extended break from the game to return stronger.
“The one word that I would describe my career as is resilient,” McIlroy wrote. “I’ve shown my resilience over and over again in the last 17 years and I will again. I’m going to take a few weeks away from the game to process everything and build myself back up for my defense of the Genesis Scottish Open and The Open at Royal Troon.”
The Genesis Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club will take place from July 11 to 14.

McIlroy teed off at the U.S. Open on Sunday three shots behind DeChambeau, but the two stars were tied at 6-under par by the tournament’s 72nd hole. Coming off of a devastating three-putt at the par-4 16th, McIltory made the same mistake again, giving up a stroke by missing from short range and walking off with a bogey.
DeChambeau hit his drive on 18 into the native area and punched out into a bunker. His up-and-down from 55 yards was nothing but clutch. DeChambeau hit the shot to 4 feet and sunk the putt to win the 124th U.S. Open.
Before his short-range miss on the 16th, McIlroy was 496-for-496 from inside three feet, per The Athletic contributor Justin Ray. Since winning his last major in 2014 at the PGA Championship, McIlroy has 21 top-10 finishes in majors.
