Riverside Community Players will preset the musical comedy “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” by William Finn and Rachel Sheinkin, opening June 21 and running weekends through July 7.

With this production, the Riverside Community Players are bringing musicals back to their season lineup, with the support of a new lighting and sound system, according to a news release.

Mia Mercado directs the musical, the fifth and final main stage production in the Riverside Community Players’ 99th season, and Renata Quijada is music director.

“The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” a Tony Award-winning and Drama Desk-winningmusical, is set in Putnam County Middle School, where six quirky adolescents, acted by adults, compete in the spelling bee, run by three equally quirky adults.

The students are all eager to win, for different reasons, and they reveal their hopes, struggles and passions as they make their way through the competition.

In the cast are Adri Rodriguez as Mitch, Andrew Amaya as Leaf, Gioia Cali as Olive, Jamie Buster-Brinley as Rona, Melissa Dupont as Logainne, Michael Shane Eastman as Panch, Raymond Henley as Barfee, Sophia Casto as Marcy and Ty Rogoff as Chip.

Performances, at the theater at 4026 14th St., Riverside, are 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays. There is also one Saturday matinee, at 2 p.m. July 6, and on opening night, there is a reception following the show.

Tickets are $20, available at riversidecommunityplayers.com or by calling the box office at 951-686-4030.

In addition to the main season, which features a variety of live theater genres, Riverside Community Players offer opportunities for youth theater, in the form of a summer youth conservatory; the Spotlight Series, which highlights new, classic or out-of-the-box productions in a readers’ theater format; and opportunities for membership. Membership benefits include season tickets, snack bar freebies and guest tickets.
