He’s just 24, but Quinn Hughes keeps adding to his reputation as one of the Vancouver Canucks’ all-time greats. And now he’s on the way to being one of the league’s greats.

Hughes was awarded the Norris Trophy as the NHL’s best defenceman in 2023-24 Thursday evening in Las Vegas. He’s the 27th player to win the trophy, which has been handed out since 1954.
Hughes is the first Canuck to win the Norris, let alone be nominated.
He’s the best defenceman in team history and now he’s one of the best in league history.
He beat out a pair of past winners to win this year: Roman Josi and Cale Makar.
Both are outstanding offensive forces, players who defend by simply not letting the other team have the puck.
Hughes did the same, but better this year.
Time and again he was in the company of icons of the game, hitting scoring milestones that had him mentioned in the same breath as the likes of Bobby Orr, Paul Coffey and Ray Bourque.

“I’m just as good as anyone,” Hughes said after the season. “But if you’re really an elite defenceman, you have to be competing and at least be in the playoffs. I don’t think this is the peak for me at all.”

At the awards ceremony, Hughes thanked his coaches, Rick Tocchet, Adam Foote and Sergei Gonchar.
“Great group of people,” he said.
Their guidance took him to a new level. He said more than once this season he heard chatter about him not being a good enough defender. He raised his game in preparation last summer, changing his diet, dialling back on his socializing, finding new ways to add strength and skill.
He also gave up drinking during the season, he told Sportsnet’s Iain MacIntyre.
“It was nothing crazy, but I learned a lot about my body. It’s not necessarily the most fun thing to do. But if you’re trying to be one of the best in the league, I think that’s something that you have to do — the sacrifice I wouldn’t have anticipated when I was 19 or 20,” he said.

The Norris Trophy is awarded off voting by the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association.
ALL-STARS
Hughes was named a first-team all-star, the first Canuck to be named a first teamer since the Sedins.
Thatcher Demko was named to the second all-star team.
DEMKO GOALIE RUNNER-UP
Demko was a finalist for the Vezina Trophy, but Winnipeg’s Connor Hellebuyck was voted as the league’s best goalie by the NHL’s 32 general managers.
