This is how the future was supposed to look.

Jack Rathbone and Jett Woo would be a Vancouver Canucks pairing one day. Rathbone would bring the speed, smarts and finish. Woo would be that classic bigger stay-at-home defender and the two would mesh to give the NHL club one competent pairing.

Well, a funny thing happened on the way to The Show. Rathbone tried to beat the longevity odds and the Canucks wanted to beef up their back end with Woo.

In October, Rathbone, now 25, was dealt to Pittsburgh for right-shot defenceman Mark Friedman, centre Ty Glover. The Penguins also got right-winger Karel Plasek. Woo, 23, continued his improvement in Abbotsford to prove he’s still on the right NHL trajectory. He was rewarded with a one-year, two-way contract on Sunday for accumulating a career high 31 points (7-24) and 93 penalty minutes this season in 62 games.

Woo is expected to earn US$775,000 in the NHL and $150,000 in the AHL.

The second-round pick in the 2018 NHL Draft also led all Abbotsford defenders in goals and points.

In 200 career AHL games, split between the Abbotsford and Utica Comets, Woo has 65 points (19-46) and 242 penalty minutes.

The 6-foot, 205 pound blueliner has also appeared in eight career Calder Cup games.

The Winnipeg native represented Canada on several international occasions, including earning a gold medal at the 2017 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament and a silver medal at the 2016 Winter Youth Olympic Games.
