Miami Marlins outfielder Dane Myers fractured his left ankle by kicking a clubhouse door in frustration after he was ejected from Saturday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds.

At bat in the top of the eighth inning, Myers thought he held up on what home plate umpire Derek Thomas ruled a swing and Myers’ third strike. Myers pointed down the first-base line, seemingly to ask Thomas to consult with first-base umpire Brennan Miller, but Thomas stuck to his call. The two exchanged words briefly before Myers was tossed.

Myers then walked into the clubhouse and “took a swipe at the door with my foot,” he told reporters after Sunday’s matchup against the Reds.

Myers said there is no displacement, so he won’t be undergoing surgery “as of now.” Instead, he’ll rehab his ankle through rest.

Myers is likely facing an absence of six to eight weeks, the Miami Herald’s Craig Mish reported.

“However long it’ll be it’s not going to be easy,” Myers said. “I’m a competitor. I want to play. I don’t really look at our record at the time. I want to win every game that we play so when things don’t go well, I take it pretty hard. I don’t want to say I care too much but I care a lot. If things don’t go my way I have to learn how to deal with it the right way.”

Composure, Myers said, is the “last missing piece” in his game, something Marlins manager Skip Schumaker reiterated to the 28-year-old after the ejection.

“He just wants to see me stay even-keeled and not take the emotions onto the field or off the field like I did,” Myers said.

Myers made his major-league debut last Fourth of July and has seen limited action for the team since. In 40 games this season, Myers has slashed .265/.337/.422 with two home runs and five stolen bases.

The Marlins, who lost two of three to the Reds, enter the All-Star break with the worst record in the National League at 33-63.
