There is a rules predicament unfolding with Shane Lowry’s tee shot on the 11th and it created a more than a 20-minute backup on the hole.
The Irishman hit his drive into a gorse bush and decided to play a provisional in case the ball wasn’t found, but unfortunately for Lowry, it was — and he wasn’t happy about that.
The Rules of Golf states a player must play their original ball if it is found, even if they would prefer to play the provisional shot. (In this case, that seemed to be Lowry’s strong preference).
Instead, Lowry was forced to take an unplayable drop from the gorse bush, and it was particularly tricky for him to figure out where to take his drop, which must be in line with the pin (back-on-the-line relief).
The sight lines from this side of the hole are extremely difficult to figure out — Lowry had to walk all the way up to the green to determine if he was taking a proper drop.
According to featured group commentators on the scene, there was debate among Lowry and the rules officials regarding whether Lowry originally declared his second shot a “provisional.” That provisional ball was a terrific one, rolling safely up to the green with a makeable bogey putt.
Instead, Lowry played that shot from the 12th fairway to short of the green and took a double bogey on the 11th, dropping back to a tie with Dan Brown at 5-under on the leaderboard.
