The Canucks made the announcement Saturday afternoon.

Hockey Night in Canada’s Elliotte Friedman has Sprong, 27, signing a one-year deal with a cap hit of $975,000. Sprong is a 6-foot, 195-pound right-shot forward originally from Amsterdam. His family moved to Canada when he was eight to help with his hockey aspirations. He grew in the Montreal region and played his junior hockey for the QMJHL’s Charlottetown Islanders.

The book on Sprong is that he’s a skilled forward with a heavy shot. Carter Rowney, who was his Anaheim Ducks teammate at the time, told The Athletic in December 2018: “I think it could be in the top half of the NHL shot-wise. That’s a good asset to have.”

PuckPedia has the Canucks with the Sprong signing $15,833 dollars under the salary cap. That is with defenceman Tucker Poolman’s $2.5 million contract counting against the cap. Poolman, 31, didn’t play at all last season because of concussion-related and migraine issues, and putting him on long-term injured reserve again would give the Canucks cap relief. It’s the final year of Poolman’s contract.

Sprong is another Pittsburgh Penguins alum coming to the Canucks, joining the likes of team president Jim Rutherford, general manager Patrik Allvin and coach Rick Tocchet. The Penguins selected Sprong in the second round of the 2015 NHL Draft.

Vancouver becomes his sixth NHL club. He had 18 goals and 43 points in 76 regular season games with the Detroit Red Wings last season. Sprong signed a one-year, $2 million deal with Detroit last July. He had a career-high 21 goals the season before with the Seattle Kraken.
