If you’ve been paying attention to the website formerly known as Twitter, you may have noticed that Jeff Marek hasn’t tweeted since day one of the 2024 NHL Entry Draft.

    That was June 28.

For one of Rogers Sportsnet’s key hosts to go suddenly silent in the middle of one of the NHL’s major events is odd enough. But for him to then not say a single thing, nor appear on his radio show nor host the 32 Thoughts podcast all while the NHL free agency was hitting full throttle just days after the draft was a five-alarm fire.

Nearly a month later, we know at least some of the why: Marek no longer works at Rogers Sportsnet.

As first reported by YYZ Sports Media’s Jonah Sigel and then the Daily Hive, Postmedia has confirmed that the veteran host has been let go by the NHL’s Canadian rights holder.

Why is not clear. A spokesperson for Rogers Sportsnet said they don’t share details on individual employee matters, but did confirm that Marek is no longer with Sportsnet.

All we know is that Marek left Las Vegas at some point after the first round of the draft. Elliotte Friedman, who has worked with Marek on the 32 Thoughts podcast since January 2018, hosted a post-draft podcast solo and referenced Marek leaving on a red eye. (Ed. note, July 27: It has been pointed out since the publication of this story that on the draft preview episode of 32 Thoughts, Friedman and Marek discussed Marek’s plan to leave Vegas after the first round of the draft, so his departure with haste from Vegas after the first was somewhat expected. But the ongoing silence was note)

The duo had said before the draft that they would have a podcast after July 1 to review the state of play after the opening of free agency but obviously they never did. Marek also indicated in his final pre-draft appearance on the Jeff Marek Show — on June 25 — that he would be back to host the show for the week following the draft. In his stead producer Matt Marchese sat in for the final two episodes of the season, on July 2 and 3.

With all the news happening around the league, you’d have expected Marek to be sharing details of what he knows on social media, but he’s been silent since June 28.

Some noticed earlier this month that Marek had been notably silent, but it wasn’t known why.

Thursday’s revelation paints everything in a very different picture.

No one around Marek is commenting, with several sources declining to comment on the situation, only saying that Marek himself is doing fine.

Marek, obviously, hasn’t spoken and hasn’t responded to direct inquiries.
