College Football gets underway in roughly one month, and yet an all-conference wide receiver and kick returner is looking for a new home.

Micah Davis, who led the country with 28 punt returns last year at Utah State, entered the transfer portal earlier this week in response to the firing of his coach, Blake Anderson.

Davis not only led the country in punt returns and finished 10th with 250 return yards, he also totaled 36 receptions for 628 yards and six touchdowns, earning All Mountain West honorable mention honors.

The 5’11 wideout spent time previously at Air Force and Iowa Western Junior College, and will now look for another home for his final season of eligibility.

The first team to emerge as a serious contender was Lane Kiffin’s Ole Miss program, but there are a handful of other teams who could pursue the speedy receiver and special teamer before the season gets going at the end of August:

Almost as soon as Davis’ name surfaced in the transfer portal, rumors circulated that he was headed to Oxford. Lane Kiffin could use another weapon on the special teams and in the wide receiver room to compete with the likes of Georgia and Alabama in the SEC, and Davis wants to play for a premier program with the goal of getting NFL draft buzz. This fit works for both sides.

Indiana heavily pursued Davis when he first entered the transfer portal out of Air Force, but issues with credits ultimately led the wideout to Iowa Western Junior College, and eventually Utah State.

Of course, Davis was pursued by Indiana’s old coaching staff, so it’s no guarantee new coach Curt Cignetti will go after him again – although this program could certainly use some reinforcements out wide.

    Illinois Fighting Illini

When Davis was in the portal prior to his time at Utah State, the two power conference teams that pursued him were Indiana and Illinois. It’s unclear if Illinois is interested still, but coach Bielema remains in the fold and could make another push for the speedy wideout and special teams contributor.

    Penn State Nittany Lions

The coach who was aggressively pursuing Davis at Indiana was Tom Allen, who is now the linebackers coach at Penn State. The Nittany Lions may not be in the market for a new receiver at this stage of the offseason, but considering the program’s pedigree and the relationship between Davis and Allen they are at least a team to watch.

    5

    Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

    Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

Davis is a native of Kennesaw, GA, and while he has played his collegiate career well away from his hometown – with stops in Colorado, Iowa, and Utah – it’s not unusual for players to return close to home to cap off college careers.

While Georgia is the obvious best program in the state, Kirby Smart’s team doesn’t seem likely to make a push for the return specialist. Tech, however, could use more reinforcements and would give Davis a chance to compete at the power conference level and earn real playing time in 2024.
