The Dallas Stars selected the Kamloops Blazers standout at No. 47 in 2021 and he looks like a key piece of their future. Among the players to go just ahead of him was Danila Klimovich, who went No. 41 to the Vancouver Canucks

The Vancouver Canucks missed on Logan Stankoven at the 2021 NHL Draft. They have plenty of company in that regard, too.

If you re-did that draft today, Stankoven would likely be a top-15 selection. Let the record show that he was actually picked No. 47 overall by the Dallas Stars, with NHL clubs obviously worried that his scoring exploits in junior with the Kamloops Blazers wouldn’t translate to pro due to Stankoven’s 5-foot-8, 171-pound frame.

Stankoven was leading the AHL points race (24 goals, 57 points in 47 games with the Texas Stars) when he was called up to Dallas last February. He became a regular there, finishing with six goals and 14 points in 24 regular season games, and then produced three goals and eight points in 19 playoff games, playing 16:01 a night as Dallas advanced to the Western Conference final.

The Canucks took Belarusian forward Danila Klimovich, 21, six picks before Dallas grabbed Stankoven, choosing him at No. 41. Klimovich, who is 6-foot-2 and 202 pounds, lost playing time to both injury and healthy scratches last year, and finished with two goals and four points in 24 regular season games with the AHL’s Abbotsford Canucks. The majority of players selected in that quadrant of the draft are still looking to get traction in pro, mind you.

Stankoven’s preparation for this coming sophomore season for him includes taking part this week at the Craig Cunningham All Heart Foundation Camp at Planet Ice Delta. Stankoven admits to still having a chip on his shoulder about how far down the draft board he fell. There were pundits who thought he should go much earlier, such as McKeen’s Hockey, who had him at No. 13, and Elite Prospects, who pegged him at No. 26.

“It’s about proving everybody wrong,” Stankoven said. “And being a smaller guy, it’s not easy. So I’m just keeping it (his draft position) there in the back of my mind.”

Asked about goals for this season, Stankoven fires back instantly: “I want to win a Stanley Cup.”

That’s not normally the answer you get back right away, and especially not for a younger guy, but Dallas has been to the past two Western Conference finals. They feel like they have a succession plan with their roster. Their forward group, for instance, has Jamie Benn, 35, and Matt Duchene, 33, as well as Jason Robertson, 25, and Roope Hintz, 27, and then Stankoven and Wyatt Johnston, 21, who is looking more and more like he was a 2021 draft steal himself as the No. 23 overall choice.

Pushed for personal stats marks, Stankoven says he is taking aim at 20 goals and 40 to 50 points this season.

“It’s a hard league to score in, a hard league to produce in,” he added. “I know that. I want to come in this year and have a good start and not dip.

“I’m not worried about outside pressure. I think I put a lot more pressure on myself to produce, to be a game changer, to make a positive impact on the ice every shift. It’s a very good league. You’re not going to produce stats every night, but I want to be somebody who always keeps getting better.

“I’ve been trying to get faster and stronger in my lower body in the gym this summer, and on the ice I’ve been trying to add a few more tools to my toolbox. The game is only getting faster and more skilled, but you also have to be prepared to go to the dirty areas and get physical. I’m trying to just find that extra one per cent.”

The Stars did have added intel going into the draft on Stankoven, since the club is owned by Tom Gaglardi, the Vancouver businessman who also owns the Blazers. Dallas also took Kamloops forward Matthew Seminoff, 20, with a sixth-round pick in 2022, and he played last season with their AHL Texas affiliate.

Also at play with the 2021 NHL Draft was the fact it had limited viewings of players, due to the COVID pandemic. The Blazers had just 22 games that season, and Stankoven suited up for for only six of them, leaving his Kamloops teammates to play at at the Under-18 world championships.

Stankoven finished his Kamloops career with 115 goals and 260 points in 179 regular season games, and 30 goals and 72 points in 41 WHL playoff and Memorial Cup games.
