It’s getting easier to wonder whether the Vancouver Giants will have centre Jaden Lipinski at their disposal to be one of their three 20-year-olds this coming WHL campaign.

Lipinski, who was the team’s leading scorer last season, isn’t going to be at Giants’ training camp when it opens next week at the Langley Events Centre. The 6-foot-4, 205-pound right-shot forward will instead be in Calgary, where he is skating with other Calgary Flames’ players and prospects in preparation for their training camp.

Lipinski was a fourth-round selection of the Flames in 2023. He has yet to sign his entry-level deal with Calgary, but that could be taken care of in short order. And according to PuckPedia.com, the Flames have contract space available, sitting five short of the 50-contract maximum.

The Flames are slated to have a team of prospects at the Young Stars Tournament in Penticton on Sept. 13-16. They will square off with prospects from the Vancouver Canucks, Edmonton Oilers and Winnipeg Jets. The Flames start their NHL preseason slate on Sept. 22, and their regular season opener is Oct. 2, on the road against the Jets.

The Giants report to camp Wednesday at the LEC and have their first on-ice sessions on Thursday. They play their first exhibition game Sept. 7, when they host the Victoria Royals at Jon Baillie Arena in Port Coquitlam, and they open the regular season on Sept. 20, with the Seattle Thunderbirds providing the opposition at the LEC.

Lipinski, who turns 20 in December, had 24 goals and 66 points in 67 regular season games with the Giants last season. It was the Scottsdale, Ariz., native’s third year with Vancouver. Ty Halaburda also had 66 points for Vancouver, but three fewer goals.

WHL teams are permitted to have three 20 year olds on their final roster every season. Without Lipinski, Vancouver is set to have four 2004-born players in camp with forwards Kyren Gronick, Chris Levis and Tyson Zimmer, and defenceman Damian Palmieri.

Levis was a 2023 seventh-round pick of the Jets and is slated to leave Giants camp for a time to attend Winnipeg’s camp. He is expected back with Vancouver.

Levis was a midseason trade pick-up for the Giants last season from the Kamloops Blazers and had 24 goals and 55 points in his 65 games in his two stops. Zimmer was also acquired in trade from the Lethbridge Hurricanes and he wound up with 23 goals and 45 points in 67 games combined.

Gronick missed time with an ankle injury and had 10 goals and 28 points in 45 games. A knee injury that required surgery and then a blood clot that developed afterwards limited Palmieri to a mere 10 games. He had no goals and two assists.

Lipinski worked on the finer details of his game last season — he started taking the odd face-off left-handed, just to give opponents a different look — and spoke about how he wasn’t likely to be a scoring forward at the pro level and needed to add layers to his game to give himself a better chance to advance.

The Flames drafted two Giants in 2023, taking winger Samuel Honzek in the first round. Honzek missed extended time last season with Vancouver with both injuries and world junior commitments,  and the Flames still frequently have development staff at Giants’ games checking on Lipinski. Former Canuck Martin Gelinas, for one, was a regular at games at the LEC.

Honzek, who turns 20 in November, is age eligible to come back to the Giants but as a signed first rounder he’s expected to play somewhere in Calgary’s system. He also won’t be at Giants camp.
