Jurriën Timber has spoken about his future ahead of the summer transfer window.
The Dutch centre-back has failed to maintain the high standards he set last season amongst a deteriorating Ajax squad. There were concrete reports that United had attempted to bring Timber to Manchester alongside Erik ten Hag.
Louis van Gaal advised Timber to stay in the Eredivisie and resist the urge to push through a transfer to Old Trafford with the view of becoming an established international defender first.
Timber, 21, has two years remaining on his contract in Amsterdam.
He was interviewed by Mike Verweij of Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf and discussed the potentiality of a transfer saga and ideas for the immediate future of his career.
“A transfer is getting closer and closer, so to speak. There is a lot of concrete interest and I have made agreements with Ajax,” Timber revealed.
“Last year, Ajax asked me to stay for at least one more season and to extend my contract. As a club boy I did that with love and after the season we will review the situation.
“At the Dutch national team, I often talk to boys who play football abroad. I want to take that step someday. But when that is, you will eventually hear and it will happen in consultation with Ajax.
“I’m still fine here anyway and I’m in no hurry. The focus is now on the cup final and the remainder of the competition.”
He went on to talk about his former centre-back partner and current United star Lisandro Martínez, perhaps baited by Verweij to reignite the speculation of a reunion.
“I know how nice it was to play with Lisandro, but my performance doesn’t depend on him. We were very good together, especially in communication.
“The fact that he did so well at Manchester United before his injury doesn’t surprise me.”
