    Men’s Open Athletes to Watch

Below are the contenders likeliest to challenge for the podium and earn the Olympia qualification to battle against reigning Mr. O Hadi Choopan.

    Tonio Burton

Burton started his pro career in the 212 division, winning the 2021 Indy Pro in his pro debut. He went on to finish in 10th at the 212 Olympia contest that same year. He then moved up to the Open for the 2022 season and won the 2022 Legion Sports Fest Pro show to qualify for the Mr. Olympia in Las Vegas, NV. But at the big show, he finished outside of the top 15.

The New York Pro is his 2023 season debut. If he added quality size without affecting his symmetry, he has a good chance to win here.

    Maxx Charles

Charles is one of the veterans in the lineup, and the New York Pro title has been on his radar for quite some time. He finished third in the 2022 contest, which tied for his highest placing in six tries.

Charles hasn’t won a title since the 2015 Tampa Pro, but he has been competitive in most of the contests he’s entered. This weekend may be his time to shine.

    Mike Hulusi

Hulusi will make his pro debut at the 2023 New York Pro, but he already made a name for himself via his guest posing along with a group of elite bodybuilders, including two-time Mr. Olympia Mamdouh Elssbiay, two-time Olympia 212 champion Shaun Clarida, and others at the Pittsburgh Pro on May 13.

Hulusi took advantage of the opportunity to go head-to-head in a most muscular pose with 2021 Arnold Classic champion Nick Walker. The fans were impressed with Hulusi’s confidence to stand among the best in the sport, and that momentum may serve him well in this show.
