Sheffield 24 is on! The powerlifting event is the brainchild of strength sports equipment manufacturer SBD Apparel. The contest was announced on SBD’s Instagram page, and the 2024 edition will repeat the popular IPF big-money meet format.
The 2024 Sheffield Powerlifting Championships (Sheffield) is the biggest prize money event on the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) calendar. The event takes place on Feb. 10, 2024, in Sheffield City Hall, UK, and features a prize pool of £445,000 (~$553,000 USD).

Records at Sheffield
The strap line for the 2023 event was “Records will Fall,” and they were true to their word. Twenty IPF world records were broken at the event:

Bonica Brown’s squat and total were the biggest-ever female raw lifts recorded in the IPF. Jesus Olivares also achieved the heaviest deadlift and total in the IPF. Additionally, his total was the heaviest raw (without knee wraps) total ever recorded in any federation.
Scoring at Sheffield
The Sheffield event has a relatively unusual scoring method. Instead of the biggest total winning in each weight class, athletes score based on the proportion of the world record in their class (e.g., if the total is 400 kilograms and the IPF world record in that class is 420 kilograms, then the score is 400/420 = 0.9524.)
The highest proportion wins the top prize — £25,000 (more than $30,000 USD). Additionally, there are £5,000 (more than $6,000 USD) bounties available for any world record squat, bench press, or deadlift.

2023 Sheffield Powerlifting Championships Results
The first Sheffield was held on March 25, 2023, at City Hall in Sheffield, UK. It featured 24 of the highest-ranked powerlifters in the IPF. With over 1,700 spectators at the venue, it was the biggest seated powerlifting event ever held. It also had the most spectators ever recorded on the livestream —over 263,000.

Sheffield 2024
The two winners from 2023, Olivares and Corrigan, are the first two qualified athletes for Sheffield 2024. The upcoming IPF Classic Open Powerlifting World Championships in Malta will serve as a Sheffield 2024 qualifier, with world champions winning invitations by totaling at least 95 percent of the total world record in their class. Further rounds of selection will continue until all 24 slots on the Sheffield 2024 roster are filled.
The inaugural Sheffield was widely hailed as one of the most spectacular and exciting powerlifting events ever held. The bar is high, but SBD plans to level up the 2024 event to meet those expectations.
