The 2023 Strongman Classic concluded on July 8, 2023, at the Royal Albert Hall in London, England. Defending champion Oleksii Novikov of Ukraine withdrew before the start of the competition vacating the top of the podium that Evan Singleton of the USA ultimately filled. Singleton ranked a half-point ahead of silver medalist Tom Stoltman, with reigning World’s Strongest Man (WSM) champion Mitchell Hooper in the bronze position.
While Singleton bested the reigning WSM champion and a previous two-time WSM champion was a major story in London, it wasn’t the only headline-grabbing event to emerge from the competition. In the opening event, the Nicol Stones, Australia’s Eddie Williams burst to the top of the leaderboard by setting a new world record of 31.66 meters. Williams’ run with the uneven stones weighing 114 kilograms and 139 kilograms was relatively smooth, given the taxation on the grip and midline. Employing a strategy of a pseudo-half-step, where the heavier stone was propped forward via his right leg, Williams secured a clean turn at the 20-meter mark before dropping the stones momentarily a few meters later.
The rules of the event allow for athletes to drop the stones once for a 10-second break, typically used to regrip and catch their breath, before embarking upon one last attempt for the most distance possible. The world record heading into the event was held by Kevin Faires, who was among the 11-strongman roster in London. Faires reached 24.61 meters at the 2022 Giants Live World Tour Finals.
Despite four athletes, including Faires breaking Faires’ previous Nicol Stone record at the 2023 Strongman Classic, only Williams eclipsed the 30-meter mark. Below are the results of the strongmen who beat the previous world record:

Coincidentally at the 2022 Giants Live World Tour Finals, four athletes, including Faires, broke the Nicol Stones world record as well. However, in that competition, they shattered the world record in succession, whereas Williams set the world record as the first strongman to attempt the opening event.
