Led by a two home run day from Nate Savoie, the Lancers defeated Vista Murrieta 17-6 to advance to Friday’s Division 1 quarterfinals at La Mirada.

“It was just one of those days where we were able to pass the torch throughout our order,” Orange Lutheran coach Eric Borba said. “I would’ve liked to see our pitchers throw a few more strikes, but we made big plays defensively to get out of some trouble.”

Jorge Rodriguez started for Vista Murrieta and immediately ran into trouble in the top of the first, hitting leadoff batter Derek Curiel and allowing a single to Brady Murrieta. Savoie belted his first home run of the day, a two-run shot that capped a three-run inning by the Lancers..

The Lancers tacked on a pair of runs in the second with a run scoring on a wild pitch and another from an RBI double by off Murrieta.

Vista Murrieta had an opportunity to put up a big number against Orange Lutheran starting pitcher Colt Peterson in the bottom of the second. Taytum Reeves and Brady Luyben led off the inning with singles but both were picked off at second base. Jaylen Adams singled and scored on Logan Colmer’s single to cut the deficit to 5-1 after two innings.

Orange Lutheran added four more runs in the third as Gavin Hottle, Curriel and Murrieta all had run-scoring hits with the fourth scoring on an error. It was 12-1 in favor of the Lancers after four innings.

Vista Murrieta got three runs in the sixth on a pair of Lancer errors and an RBI single from Ryland Duson but trailed 12-4 after six innings. .

“A team like that is going to take advantage of your mistakes and they did just that,” Broncos head coach Michael Tousignant said. “This group’s senior leadership, especially when we were struggling, is what I’ll remember most about this year.”

Hanoian led off the seventh with a triple and scored when Curiel reached on an error. Josiah Hartshorn then hit a three-run homer followed by Savoie’s second homer of the game, right over the batter’s eye in center field to finish Orange Lutheran’s scoring.

“It’s definitely good to have a day like this,” Savoie said. “We’ve been taught that our job isn’t to get hits but to put barrels on the ball and throughout our lineup we did just that.”

Vista Murrieta got two more runs in the seventh on a wild pitch and an RBI single by Adams .

Savoie and Hanoian were 3 for 4 at the plate to lead Orange Lutheran. Meanwhile, Colmer and Reeves were 3 for 3 to lead Vista Murrieta.
