It’s a common occurrence for those attending sporting events at B.C. Place. Hearing the cheers and commotion inside the stadium while one is still dozens deep in the line outside.

Sure, Vancouver and Co. like to show up late or last minute to events, but even when allowing for some cushion, it’s still pushing one’s entry until after the opening kickoff/whistle.
Saturday’s B.C. Lions home opener against the Calgary Stampeders is expected to draw the biggest sporting crowd of the season to the Dome, with 55,000 tickets sold for the game. Adding to the expected crush: the pre-game concert by hip-hop icon 50 Cent.
The concert kicks off at 3 p.m.
The game kicks off at 4 p.m.
Your arrival time should be well before those if you want to witness the start of either.
B.C. Place spokeswoman Jenny McKenzie said the best way to guarantee on-time entry is to be early, but also don’t get fixated on one gate.
“Ask hosts and any staff who are floating around if there are any gates that are less busy. There usually is,” she said. “We find that the Gates A and H (off Beatty and Robson) tend to get busier because lots of people are coming in off the patio, but we’ve got lots of other gates open too.”

The Lions are helping the cause by starting their party in the plaza at 10:30 a.m., with the event extending from the Terry Fox Plaza into both Robson and Beatty streets. The Backyard Party will feature an obstacle course and face-painting for kids, as well as $5 beer for the adults. Music will be provided by the Famous Players Band.
It’s not the first 50,000-plus crowd of the year, but looks to be the biggest. Punjabi superstar Diljit Dosanjh got 54,000 for the first stop on his North American Dil-Luminati Tour, and the Vancouver Whitecaps got well over 50,0000 for their ill-fated game against the Lionel Messi-less Inter Miami.
But the Lions had said they’re expecting close to 55,000 for their game Saturday.
“With all sold-out events, we’re always fully equipped and prepared for a great fun, safe environment,” said McKenzie. “I think we’ve been lucky to have a full building a couple of times already. This year we had a full house for the Diljit Dosanjh concert, the Inter Miami match, and we should have a full house again next month with the Rolling Stones. It’s something that we love to see — can’t wait to have the Lions’ fans back in the building.”

She said the facility will be able to fully staff their upper concourse concessions, and the usual fare that tops the popularity list — chicken strips, hotdogs and the $5 menu — will also be fully supplied. There’s also a new menu item debuting — Tater Tot Nachos.

SKIP THE QUEUE RAGE
B.C. Place’s suggestions to make your entry into the stadium easier:
• Please have your ticket ready to scan upon entry. Ensure electronic tickets are downloaded to your mobile device and available to scan before entry.
• Minimize the number of personal items in your possession. Personal items such as mobile phones, keys, wallets and coins, watches, belts, shoes or jackets DO NOT need to be removed unless requested by venue staff.
• Leave bags at home if possible. Bags larger than 12″ x 12” x 6” aren’t permitted.

• Allow yourself extra time for entry to the venue, and observe the signage and direction of venue staff.
• At entry, place objects such as umbrellas, purses, permitted bags or cameras on the table before passing through the metal detector. After walking through the metal detector, guests are free to collect their belongings on the table.
• If the metal detector is activated, guests will be required to participate in a secondary screening before entering and this may slow your access to the venue.
